The Word of God is known for its unwavering clarity and directness, even when its instructions seem demanding or challenging. It often calls upon us to embrace ideals that may appear impossible, causing us to question how God could issue such “weighty” commands when He is fully aware of our individual circumstances.
Consider, for instance, the scripture that exhorts us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). This directive can be a bitter pill to swallow for those nursing grievances and seeking revenge against those who wronged them. Just when vengeance seems within reach, the scriptural reminder emerges: love and pray for those same adversaries.
Another command that strikes a chord with its directness is the call to “be joyful always.” Wait a moment; did the Bible really say “always”? Yes, indeed it did! This command extends its reach to both bright and dark days alike. It beckons us to find joy when our jobs overwhelm us, when challenges seem insurmountable. We are to rejoice in success and in failure, in abundance and in scarcity.
The question arises: Is maintaining an attitude of constant joy feasible, regardless of circumstances? The answer echoes with a resounding yes! The wellspring of joy does not depend on external conditions; it is rooted in God’s nature and emanates from His Spirit. It’s a hallmark of those in communion with Him as His sons and daughters.
In the words of Paul, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). This assertion underscores the essential qualities of righteousness, peace, and joy that should be evident in the lives of God’s kingdom dwellers, all of which are ignited by the Holy Spirit.
To claim spiritual rebirth while lacking the fruit of joy is an inconsistency. Just as Jesus explained that His peace differs from worldly peace (John 14:27), similarly, the joy being discussed here transcends worldly pressures. It springs forth from the Word of God, reassuring us of His providence, flowing like a river through those who are still and acknowledge Him as God (Psalm 46).
This joy enables you to smile when tears might be expected, to uplift others even in your own trials, and to maintain unwavering faith even in the midst of storms.
Reflect on these teachings and engage in prayer. Christ warned that life would bring tribulations, yet urged us to take heart, for He has conquered the world (John 16:33). If that’s the case, why should we fret? He also advised against worrying about the future (Matthew 6:34).
Lay your burdens at His feet and embrace His joy as your strength through life’s ebbs and flows. Reject prolonged sorrow, and make room for the joy that dawns with each new day. Let this joy dispel nights of sorrow, transforming every day into a radiant and promising one. When friends inquire about the source of your perpetual smile, proudly proclaim, “It’s Jesus – He’s the cornerstone of my joy!” Hallelujah!
