The funeral of Christian Atsu, who died in the earthquake that struck Turkey last month, is currently taking place outside State House in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Hundreds of people, including Ghana’s president and representatives from Atsu’s former Turkish club Hatayspor and the national team, are paying their respects to the footballer who is widely considered a national hero.
Atsu’s widow, Marie-Claire Rupio, delivered a tearful tribute at the funeral, reading a speech that spoke of her continued love for her late husband even in death. Representatives from Ghana’s sporting community also spoke, with Sport Minister Mustapha Ussif calling Atsu an inspiration whose legacy will endure.
Atsu’s body was recovered two weeks after the earthquake and returned to Ghana a month ago. He will be buried later in his home village in the southeastern part of the country. The 31-year-old played for several clubs in the English Premier League, including Chelsea, Newcastle, and Everton, as well as making 65 appearances for Ghana’s national team.
Many Ghanaians have spoken of Atsu’s love for humanity and his support for the underprivileged in the country. Despite the solemnity of the occasion, drumming and brass bands have contributed to a colourful cultural display. Newcastle United fans also honoured Atsu’s memory recently with a minute’s applause.
